The Modern Pin Up Defined

When using the term “pin-up”, images of Bettie Page or Marilyn Monroe come to mind. Today’s pin-up still evokes the coiffed hair and dreamy cat eyes of yesteryear, but with a new twist. Her beauty is not defined by standards of the 1940’s and 50’s but shows sassiness, creativity, intelligence with a dash of feminine power and playful innocence.

Today’s pin up may be thick or thin, tattooed or not, or more into the goth scene than not. The one thing all of today’s pin ups have in common is keeping the soul of pin up alive.

In a recent article by April Long for Elle magazine (December 2010), Ms. Long stated that “Experiencing my own pin up potential made me feel surprisingly liberated.”

One needs to look no further than Dita Von Teese, or the late Anna Nicole Smith to experience the modern pin up, but I invite you to take a look at the deliciousness that is Kerosene Deluxe, or Jamie Bahr. These ladies aren’t sitting around waiting for the last ten pounds to drop off. No! They’ve seized the liquid eyeliner by its horns and are giving vivaciousness a new meaning.
